What is distributed storage?
Distributed storage pools the drives of multiple servers into a single logical storage layer managed by software. Every write is placed across several nodes using replication or erasure coding, so no single disk or host holds the only copy of your data. The software layer handles data placement, failure detection, and automatic rebuild, and it presents volumes to clients over standard protocols such as iSCSI. Capacity and performance grow by adding nodes rather than replacing an array.
What are the types of distributed data storage?
Three by data model: block storage for raw volumes attached to VMs, hypervisors, and databases; file storage for shared namespaces over NFS or SMB; object storage for immutable items with metadata behind an HTTP API. Two by topology: disaggregated, where storage nodes sit separately from compute, and hyperconverged, where both run on the same servers. Two by redundancy: replicated, which favours latency and rebuild speed, and erasure coded, which favours usable capacity.
What are the three types of storage methods?
Block, file, and object. Block writes fixed-size blocks with no inherent metadata and is the right fit for virtual machines, transactional databases, and any latency-sensitive workload. File organises data in a hierarchy of directories and is used where multiple clients need a shared mount point. Object stores whole items with rich metadata in a flat namespace and suits backups, media, and archive data accessed over HTTP.
Which is the best type of storage?
There is no single best type; the workload decides. Block storage wins for VMs, containers with persistent volumes, and databases, because it delivers the lowest latency and highest IOPS per volume. File storage wins where several hosts need concurrent access to the same directory tree. Object storage wins for large, immutable datasets where throughput and cost per TB matter more than latency. Most infrastructure estates run block storage as the primary tier and add object storage for backup and archive.
What are the benefits of distributed storage?
Fault tolerance is built in, since data survives disk, node, and in a replicated setup, site failures without a restore. Scaling is incremental and non-disruptive, so you add capacity or performance without downtime or forklift upgrades. It runs on standard x86 hardware, which removes proprietary array lock-in and long refresh cycles. Cross-site volume replication gives you a real disaster recovery position. Total cost of ownership drops because you buy commodity servers and scale to actual demand rather than provisioning for a three-year peak.
What is a framework for distributed storage?
A distributed storage framework is the software layer that turns independent servers into one coherent storage system. It handles data placement and striping, redundancy through replication or erasure coding, consistency guarantees, cluster membership and failure detection, automatic rebuild after a node or drive loss, and protocol presentation to clients. Nubius Distributed Storage is built on StorPool, a software-defined block storage engine designed for primary, latency-sensitive workloads.
Which system is primarily used for distributed storage?
It depends on the tier and the operator. Ceph is the most widely deployed open source system, but it needs large clusters and in-house expertise to perform predictably. StorPool is used where the priority is consistent low latency for primary block workloads on standard servers. VMware vSAN appears in traditional hypervisor estates, and S3-compatible object systems dominate backup and analytics. Nubius standardises on StorPool and delivers it fully managed, from architecture and deployment through to 24/7 monitoring.
